How many stamps do I need?

You need only two stamps, one for the first ounce of weight (the letter plus its envelope) and another that covers any additional ounces.

To determine how many stamps you need, take the length (in inches) of your letter and divide it by two. Take that number and round up to find out how many stamps you’ll need on the front of the envelope. 

Here are some examples:

A 4-inch by 6-inch postcard requires four stamps.

A 5-inch by 11-inch letter requires six stamps.

A 9-inch by 12-inch manila envelope requires 10 stamps. (You might need additional postage if the location is far away.)

NOTES: The Post Office does not recommend using the Priority Mail envelope as a letter envelope, but our tests showed that it worked fine. As long as you don’t print on envelopes too many times with your laser printer, you should be fine. Also, the Post Office recommends that all letters in the United States (domestic mail) weigh no more than 3.5 ounces. They say that letters weighing over 3.5 ounces must be sent with Priority Mail or Parcel Post instead of First Class Mail!
